About Grizedale at Velo Bikes
Hello and Welcome to Velo Online, Velo Grizedale and Velo Ulverston.
Known to many as Grizedale Mountain Bikes and Gill cycles, we are a pair of independent bike shops based in South Cumbria. We have many years of experience spread between the two shops, a strong and friendly team of staff who's love for bikes shows in their work. Both our shops have a wide variety of bikes, clothing and accessories. Both have fully kitted out workshops where mechanics are on hand to help you with any bike issues large or small. We also have a large Bike Hire Centre based at our Grizedale store.

Grizedale Mountain Bikes
As part of Velo, Grizedale Mountain Bikes has something for everyone. Established over 12 years ago, Grizedale Mountain Bikes is the only bike hire centre in Grizedale Forest. Originally working out of a shed, progressing to what is now Go-Apes check in desk and finally moving across the river to where we are today. Grizedale Mountain Bikes started out as a small bike hire business and has gone from strength to strength to become one of the North West's largest bike hire centres - with approximately 200 bikes on offer to hire out into the forest. We also have a large shop offering bikes, accessories and clothing. We are probably best known for our ex-hire bikes which we start to sell off after only a season of use(approx 6 months). These bikes come fully serviced and ready to take you on your next adventure. A true bargain! We also offer demo bikes for those wishing to try a few bikes before buying! Give us a call to find out more, or which bikes we currently have on demo. From the novice mountain biker to the most experienced enduro or downhill racer, we have trails, bikes and lots of "shiny bikey bits" for you to enjoy!
With most of our clothing from Fox and Madison, we have a selection to suit everyone. Not only do we have a large range of men's mountain bike clothing, the pros and cons of which which the boys will be happy to discuss with you at length, but we also have a large range of women's clothing, all tried and tested by our manager Katie and enduro team rider Claire. Both of whom will be happy to give expert advice, on what is best to wear whilst you are out riding (see our staff section at the bottom of the page for our current favorite riding kit). Finally don't forget our extensive children’s section which also includes children's wear from Fox, Madison and Polaris and has parents coming back year after year to renew their young rider’s kits.
After saying all this it is difficult to think we stock anything else but we also have a large selection of spares from Shimano and Sram, as well as accessories from Raceface, Hope, Syncros, Topeak, BBB and Five Ten as well as many many more. The shop is open 7 days a week, 363 days of a year (Christmas and Boxing day we get off for bad behavior!), from 9am to 5.30pm (we often close early in winter so please give us a call before you set off and we will tell you our winter opening hours). Our friendly and approachable staff are always ready to answer any questions about bikes, kit, local trails and more.
HIRE and TRAILS
Based in the heart of Grizedale Forest, within the Grizedale Visitors Centre, we are perfectly situated for a days riding, or a fun day out with the family. The forest offers gravel track trails, free from traffic, perfect for a family ride (though be warned we are very hilly!). We also have the fantastic North Face Mountain Bike Trail which is a "Red" graded mountain bike trail, perfect for those either taking a first attempt at singletrack riding or for those more experienced riders looking for a well designed technical cross country trail. For the more adventurous we also have a short "Black" trail which is certainly not for the faint hearted, and requires a good deal of experience before undertaking. If all this is not enough to wet your biking appetite we also have some amazing bridleways criss-crossing the forest. Our helpful staff are always willing to talk you through the best route for you and your group or we can supply you with your own personal guides to help you get the most from your riding experience. Either way we would love you to come and test our knowledge and find out about our beautiful trails for yourself. The trails are open all day, everyday and our hire centre is open 7 days a week from 9.15am - 3pm for taking bikes out onto the trails and all bikes must be returned by 5pm. Please click on our Hire Page to book your bikes now and avoid disappointment on the day.
If you thought this was everything that Grizedale Mountain Bikes has to offer then you would be wrong! On top of all this we also have a fully kitted out workshop, where our experienced mechanics are ready to help you get back on your bike, whether it be a quick fix (or a "can you just?") to the "full monty" of bike services, we are here to help. We are happy to accept walk in customers and will fit you in as soon as we possibly can - often meaning that all you need to do is head to the on-site cafe for a coffee and we will hopefully have finished your bike by the time you return. For longer jobs and full servicing it is recommended that you book your bike in to avoid disappointment.
WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO AT GRIZEDALE?
Grizedale Forest offers visitors lots of different things to do. As well as biking in the forest there are also high wire adventures at Go Ape, lots of walking, sculpture trails, a play ground and an on-site cafe serving drinks and homemade food and cakes throughout the year.
With so much to do, so many trails to explore the question is when are you planning your visit?
Katie and all the team at Grizedale Mountain Bikes look forward to meeting you in Grizedale Forest soon.
Velo Ulverston (Formerly Gill cycles)
Situated on Lightburn Industrial estate in Ulverston, Velo Ulverston is in the perfect place to pop in and see what we have in store this week, with a shop, workshop and parking outside there is no excuse not to head over! Our friendly, knowledgeable and approachable staff are always ready to help.
Velo Ulverston was formally known as Gill cycles and has a long history in the town. Originally based in "The Gill" in Ulverston, and recently being based on Lightburn industrial estate, Gill has also expanded through the years. In 2014 Grizedale Mountain Bikes acquired Gill cycles, and brought two well known independent cycle shops together. The name Velo Ulverston was introduced in the Summer of 2015, with the website soon to follow.
At Velo Ulverston we stock a wide range of bikes from Scott, Cube, Trek, Saracen, Specialized, Frog, Mondraker, Yeti and many more. There are bikes for all riding disciplines, and we work with many of the BIKE TO WORK SCHEME's (phone us for more information). With clothing for all the family from Fox and Madison, accessories from Raceface, Hope, Rockshox and many more. We stock road, Bmx and mountain bike accessories.
The workshop has mechanics on hand everyday, ready to help you with a quick fix, a long job, or full service. The workshop is often very busy, so it is best to give us a call and book your bike in before you bring it. We are happy to do anything from fix a puncture up to a full bike service, custom build or any thing else you feel your bike is in need of, as well as give advice, discuss local trails and answer any questions you might have.
Pop in for a laugh, a gossip and plenty of biking knowledge from the local biking guru Lee.
Lee and the team are ready to welcome you to Velo Ulverston.
Well what can I say but you are here!!!!! Welcome to the newest part of Velo. Our online retail and booking service.
"Going Live" in July 2015, this is a bold step into pastures new for the previously non "internet experienced" team! But don't panic! Luckily we have Joe and Stuart to help us and you on your way to a fantastic online retail experience! Have a look around the site, tell us what you think and hopefully we will be able to tempt you with our online store or maybe even get you to book a bike and we will see you at Grizedale.
